Puzzles

I haven’t started, or finished one for that matter, in ages.

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed putting puzzles together. Mind you, these are online puzzles, and I have all of the pieces upright, not in a jumble. I’m not going to even think about how much time it would take me to put one together, like those we used to put on the kitchen table, or the living room floor. Yikes.

I use the app called Jigsaw HD, and have for a number of years. I even take interesting screenshots that I can make into puzzles. I really enjoy it. I also get to listen to a book while putting the puzzle together. What’s not to enjoy?

Most of the puzzles I’ve done have taken about 1 1/2-2 hours to finish, and worth every minute. The relaxation is amazing.

Until next time, stay happy, and healthy loving the Lord.

Absolute bliss 5/21/25

It’s raining.

Finally.

It’s been raining, with some thunder, and lightening, for about 30 minutes. The temperature has dropped by about 10º.

The plants in the park have been needing rain for quite a while. The leaves have begun shriveling up, and they look so sad.

I can’t wait to go for my walk in the morning. Everything smells so fresh at the moment, though I have to smell that freshness through the bedroom window as it’s almost 10:30pm. I love the smell of wet dirt.

Until next time, stay happy and love the Lord.

Post script: the walk in the park, well, around the park was marvelous, though the smell of dog urine was exagerrated, not washed away by the rain. Yuck.

Eating “real” food. 5/21/25

I have to say that one of the many great things about living here, in Mexico, is the availability of fresh farm to table food.

Is there a way to know the trail of said food? Not that I can see. We used to buy all of our produce from a market about 2 km from us. Now I buy it from Soriana, and have it delivered. Is everything pesticide free, E-coli free, carcinogenic free?

I have no idea. And, I have no idea how to find the answer to that question.

I feel very comfortable buying our fruit, and veg from the Mercado Paseos, the one about 50 ft. from the bank we use. Where they’re grown, I don’t know. I don’t have enough command of the language to ask the people behind the counter.

All I know, for sure, is that they’re not processed foods, and they don’t have petroleum based colorings in them. Check out how many foods you eat that have dyes called Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, Red 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6. These are in thousands of foods you eat every day.

They are, however, only in processed foods. Try to get away from the foods that come prepackaged in any way, brightly colored cereals, even canned fruits may contain some of the dyes.

As I said, we are fortunate that we have the fresh food available to us 365 days of the year. We can buy from any of the supermarkets, or from a small local market; only the food imported from the US has petroleum based colorings.

Choose the good stuff. Shop at the farmers markets in your area. Get back to eating food the way God intended you to eat it.

Until next time, stay happy, and love the Lord.

A true domino effect

Just after the beginning of this year, I started the dominoes falling.

They were slow to fall at the start, but as the days, weeks, and now months have gone by, they are falling quite routinely. Thank you Lord.

As I have said, I started by doing 2 things simultaneously- first was reducing the amount of alcohol I consumed, and the second was praying the Rosary daily. Both have had a profound effect on my way of living.

After I managed those 2 changes I started walking again, around the park. At first it was sheer torture, but as I’ve gotten more accustomed to it, things are easing up a bit.

Next came my ability to stay focused throughout the day, getting more done than any other time since we’ve been here. I’ve been able to rearrange the kitchen cabinets, get them all cleaned out. I’ve started labeling everything going into the fridge, as well as the cabinets with masking tape, and a marking pen.

I’m back to making kombucha again, as well as baking bread weekly.

Then I bought 2 5-tier storage units that remained in their boxes, on the living room floor for 2 months. We got the sliding doors out of the 3rd bathroom, I got the storage units up, and rearranged the pantry. I was able to put shelves in the lower cabinets, made of the leftover pine boards we’ve had for about a year, (we were going to make who knows what with them but never did so I reallocated them to my project), and was able to completely redo the pantry.

I have since moved this over there, and those things over here, making room in the living room to actually move around. Our storage unit, up on the roof, we let Jesús, and Liz use while they were here, but Jesús has gone on to another job, though Liz still works upstairs for a neighbor. Anyway, they will be moving their stuff out of our unit and over to their new living space so we’ll be able to gut the living room, and live as normal, older, rich retirees that we are.

You needed a laugh, and you know it.

I have all kinds of before photos, and will take plenty of during, and after photos to show you the progress. I’m anxious to make it happen. We bought a robot vacuum before we moved down here, but have never been able to use it because we still have so many of those blasted yellow, and black totes all over the apartment there’s not enough open floor to use it.

Until next time, thank you, any of you, that prayed for the resurrection of my blog site. As I have said before, with the help of my sister Martha, the Lord, and all of my prayers, I am, once again continuing to produce nonsense. Stay happy, and loving the Lord.

I tried (5/19/25)

and failed.

Fortunately.

Once again I almost drowned the Saki electric kettle, my favorite, (though you’d never know it by the way I treat it), appliance in the kitchen. I give it a vinegar bath every so often, when the water starts to taste of something. Water shouldn’t have a taste of anything, so when it does, I boil a cup of vinegar in with the water, discard, wipe out the kettle, and refill with water.

Lovely. I forgot to put a yellow microfiber cloth under the spout, however. You see, when it boils, it has a tendency to spit water out of the spout, especially when it’s been over filled, as it may have been this time. So, when I came back to it, an hour, or so later, as I had been creating the amazing coat rack, (see prior post), the readout on the kettle was looking rather wonky. When I tried to change the setting, it didn’t respond.

That’s when I noticed it sitting in a small pond of vinegar water, which had also run under the cutting board, and was pooling there also. Needless to say, I quickly found the cloth, tried to blot everything dry, ran and got my hairdryer, and started to dry the control coil on the base.

Nope. That didn’t help. I messed around with trying to make sure everything was dry, wiping around what I believe is called a thermocoil, you know, the heating element on the base of the kettle. That didn’t work either.

I gave up. Of course I said multiple prayers, and promise the Lord all kinds of nonsense, but He listened anyway.

I left it on the counter, overnight, unplugged, and now, the kettle is full of water as I type this, and is coming to the boil. Thank you Lord. Again.

Until next time, stay happy, and loving the Lord.

DIY stuff. (5/18/25)

Finally, I was able to put up the coat hooks that I’ve been trying to put up for over a year.
I was able to use the other white board, the sibling to the one that is holding up the pine planks in the pantry, and 5 J-hooks that I found somewhere. Ivan had to help me as I’ve never done anything like it before. I learned quite a bit about predrilling the holes for the screws, and he learned how to do a few things “the easier” way. Let me show you what I mean.

Here is the before photo. Can we all agree that it is a fairly boring space?

That is my bastón, waiting for me to take another walk. Not tonight my friend. My feet, and legs are too tired. Gosh, I’m getting old! Better old than dead.

Here’s just after I got it on the wall.

It definitely added a bit of interest, don’t you think? It sure will come in handy once the cooler weather gets here. Easy to grab our jacket, or vest. We don’t really use heavy coats down here, though some days we could use them.

Enough of that. I just wanted to show off my burgeoning DIY skills.

Until next time, stay happy, and healthy in the Lord.

Walking (5/18/25)

WOW!!!

Who knew that I could/can walk over 10,000 steps in a day?

Not me, for sure.

I was convinced that I could only walk once, maybe twice, around the park, for a kilometer total. Not so.

I started walking, with a lot of pain, sometime towards the end of March. On the 20th of March, it took me 47 minutes to walk 1.5km with an average pace of 31 min/km. I used my bastón as a crutch, stopped every 20 ft to stretch my lower back, and had my earbuds at a fairly high volume, listening to a book.

Fast forward to this week; one day I walked 3km at an average pace of 20 min/km, and an average heart rate of 115 bpm. I’ve walked over 6,000 steps everyday for the past 2 weeks. Let me show you.

Why I walked 12,172 steps last Tuesday, I don’t remember. I only know that there had to have been a breeze each time I went out, and the sun must have been “just so” in the sky, because when there’s no, or little breeze, the heat makes it too difficult for me to walk.

I listen to books, spiritual as well as fluff, while I walk, but with whichever earbuds I’m wearing, I have them so I can hear the sounds around me. (It makes hearing the cars coming along beside me easier to hear, and avoid being hit.) I carry my bastón with me every time I walk so I can use it to clean the dog poop off the sidewalk, (though I almost never walk inside the park as it smells of dog urine, yuck), or as a crutch. Now that I’m walking faster, and farther, I use it to keep me balanced.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I’m working diligently towards getting rid of the excess weight I’ve gained over the last year, sitting sedately in my “nest”, and getting my mobility back. I’m tired of being tired.

Until next time, and I again, thank the Lord for a next time, stay happy, and healthy in the Lord.

Bathroom conversion (5/9/25)

We have 3 bathrooms in the apartment, 1 of which we have never used, or had any plans to use.

So, we converted it into a storage room. It has been the best thing we’ve done in a while.

The photos were a bit difficult to obtain as the doorway is small, as is the actual BR. Nevertheless, you can see that I’ve been able to get the shelving units in, and up, and have started putting the essentials on said shelves. It’s definitely a work in progress, but it has transformed the pantry. Let me show you the other things new to the pantry.

From this mess.
And this mess.
To this. Notice the plastic drawer divider holding up the pine plank. Ingenuity at its best.
The middle, where 2 boards overlap, I used a shelf that could have gone in our kitchen cabinets, but didn’t.
In all of its glory.
This has been a game changer, believe me. We can walk into the pantry, then into the storage room without tripping over all of this stuff.

I used 2 plastic drawer dividers to hold up the outer ends of the pine planks, but had a leftover short white “shelf” from the kitchen to use in the middle. You can see the board isn’t he photo above.

Well, I think I’m back in business with the blog site, thanks to my sister, and her wonderful suggestion. That, and a lot of prayers.

Until next time, stay happy, and healthy in the Lord.

Routines (5/9/25)

Mine, in particular.

At the beginning of this year, I decided I wanted to do a few things routinely. Things such as drinking less alcohol, (or maybe quit drinking it altogether), pray the Rosary everyday, exercise, and read the Bible in a year. I thought to, maybe, start some sort of yoga program, or a Pilates-type exercise program, to start walking every day, or at least a few times a week.

One thing led to another, and I only started 2 of those things, my daily Rosary prayers, and listening to the Bible in a Year, both on the Hallow app.

Unfortunately for me I didn’t get to the exercising bits until recently, having gained about 10 pounds in the past year, hovering at 90kg on my 155cm frame. My hips became painful, my lower legs swelled to an incredible size as I sat most of the day, every day, and my back, well, let’s not even go there.

Now, thank the Lord, I have begun a daily routine that starts each morning with saying the Rosary, then listening to the BIAY, then doing my selected set of back, and core strengthening exercises. All of that takes about 45 minutes, and gets me ready for my day, whatever it brings. I try to get outside for my walk around the park between 11am, and 1pm.; that is when the sun it high enough in the sky to give me a gentle tan, and still cool enough to enjoy the walk.

I started out walking just one time around the park, a 1k walk to be sure. I had to stop about every 10 ft, or so to stretch my back, and hips, then continue on. I always have my walking stick, a 4ft high 2” in diameter, branch that I found in the park several months ago, to aid me in my walks. I started out leaning quite heavily on it, but now I carry it at my side, mostly to clean the dog poop off the sidewalks in the park.

Actually, I’ve taken, recently, to walking in the streets around the outside of the park; no dog poop. Plus, it gives me the most amount of unshaded road. I can absorb as much vitamin D as I can without too much shadow.

Yesterday, for the first time ever, I walked 3 times around the park for a 3k total walk. It has taken me about 2 months to get to this distance, and it’s getting so much easier to walk farther with less pain, thank you Jesus, that I actually look forward to my walks. The 3 times around takes me about an hour at the moment, but as I build up my musculature again, and decrease my overall volume, I should be will be able to walk faster, and with less discomfort than when I started walking.

Until next time, stay happy, and healthy in the Lord.

I leave you with a photo of my trusty, rustic walking stick, my ever faithful companion. Mi bastón. (Me bas-TONE)

Finally. (4/30/25)

We’ve been talking about removing the sliding doors from the third bathroom shower for more months than I can remember.

Today, we did it. It took us a bit of this, and a bit of that, but with main strength and awkwardness, we managed to achieve our goal.

A few weeks ago I bought 2 black 5 tier shelving units that will/should help organize our pantry area. Someone’s tools, and someone else’s cook books, and printed recipes take up quite a bit space, and make quite a bit of mess. Now, I just have to get in there, and put up the units.

Easier said than done, however. My frequent lack of enthusiasm is painful. Plus, I’m soooo busy these days doing “things” that the day is over, and the shelves are still in their boxes.

Here’s a photo of the screws we encountered when trying to remove the metal side panels from the bathroom. Which type of screwdriver would you suggest we use?

We got the horrible sliding doors off the walls, and were left with a blank, albeit yellow canvas.

I was able to put up the shelving units, and clean out the pantry, but that is in a post for next week as I hadn’t been able to get on my webpage to edit this post until 5/18. Thanks to my sister Martha.

So, until next time, stay happy, and healthy in the Lord.

Post script: today Ivan and I have been married 49 years. And they said it wouldn’t last. We’re laughing.
